Expanded from the drabble "Extreme Measures at Fourteen".

She always lost her shoes when she took root. She didn't know why. Her clothes and even any jewelry she might be wearing came out from under the bark intact, but anything on her feet just vanished forever. She still had her old sneakers at home, but her mother was going to be pissed at her for wasting such a nice pair of Converse.
